Introduction
VPN means virtual private network, used to make your browsing totally anonymous even from ISP , but it does? I always concerned about VPN service i use does it really work and how it works and after going through lot of forum, sites Wikipedia, i found Yes the do! but up to what extent? Today i am going to explain each and every aspect of VPN service.
Why you Need a VPN service
Well, In a recent survey conducted by Symantec Corporation, it was found that 65% of internet users had been a victim of some kind of cybercrime, including viruses and malware attacks, online scams, phishing attacks, hacking of social-networking profiles, credit card fraud and sexual predation. Cybercrime has become a more lucrative criminal industry then the illicit drugs trade, and generates over $US 100 billion dollars annually. There is no doubt - cybercrime is rife, and is spreading at an alarming rate. So its time to increase your security along with an antivirus, vpn means a virtual private network and it does what it mean, vpn service provider creates a virtual network between you and every site you visit and data flows in encrypt manner show nobody is going to know to what you are accessing.
VPN allows us to visit sites which are blocked in our region due to any reason (not bad)
How it works
Well this is my favorite part, Its easy let imagine you have a fight with one of your buddy and you need some information or something only he had so you will ask a buddy whom you can trust to bring that information or whatever that thing is. That's how a vpn works, In technical words(you know i cannot the cut and make explanation short because that after that it will be like incomplete answer... Its easy to understand just go it through once :D)
- The VPN client connects to a VPN server via an external network interface.
- The VPN server assigns an IP address to the VPN client from the VPN server's subnet. The client gets internal IP address 192.168.1.50, for example, and creates a virtual network interface through which it will send encrypted packets to the other tunnel endpoint (the device at the other end of the tunnel). This interface also gets the address 192.168.1.50.
- When the VPN client wishes to communicate with the company server, it prepares a packet addressed to 192.168.1.10, encrypts it and encapsulates it in an outer VPN packet, say an IPSec packet. This packet is then sent to the VPN server at IP address 5.6.7.8 over the public Internet. The inner packet is encrypted so that even if someone intercepts the packet over the Internet, they cannot get any information from it. They can see that the remote host is communicating with a server/firewall, but none of the contents of the communication. The inner encrypted packet has source address 192.168.1.50 and destination address 192.168.1.10. The outer packet has source address 1.2.3.4 and destination address 5.6.7.8.
- When the packet reaches the VPN server from the Internet, the VPN server decapsulates the inner packet, decrypts it, finds the destination address to be 192.168.1.10, and forwards it to the intended server at 192.168.1.10.
- After some time, the VPN server receives a reply packet from 192.168.1.10, intended for 192.168.1.50. The VPN server consults its routing table, and sees this packet is intended for a remote host that must go through VPN.
- The VPN server encrypts this reply packet, encapsulates it in a VPN packet and sends it out over the Internet. The inner encrypted packet has source address 192.168.1.10 and destination address 192.168.1.50. The outer VPN packet has source address 5.6.7.8 and destination address 1.2.3.4.
- The remote host receives the packet. The VPN client decapsulates the inner packet, decrypts it, and passes it to the appropriate software at upper layers.
Risks and Precaution
We cannot trust a vpn service provider completely as it is encrypting data it can collect all information, even private, when you suffer using a vpn and can sell it for money, i or anyone cannot claim which vpn is doing this because let say if your any private information leaked then you cannot a claim that, that vpn service provider is responsible because in return they can justify that their system was hacked because in today's world anything can be hacked or cracked heard of anonymous ;).
Precaution you can take and you should,
- While using a vpn never submit your personal to any site(trusted too)
- Avoid suffering FB, logging until your are not using vpn for that site, i mean if you are using vpn to access a site abc then you can(if necessary to access content) as your using vpn for that site.
- Dont just turn off your vpn tool, quit it too
- Dont forget to delete cookies and others thing after each visit(with or without vpn)
